When we workout, we stress our muscles, joints and tissues. We thus need to “repair”, give time and aid to help the muscles, joints and tissue recover and recover faster to sustain and optimise our athletic performance. Sports massage helps to rebalance our body and relieve aches and strains arising from related issues or repetitive strain injuries. Sports Massage also reduces muscle pain and soreness, joint tightness or stiffness and as well as helps increase range of motion and flexibility. A massage also helps to increase blood circulation to help the healing of injuries if any. It also stimulates blood circulation and lymph fluids, breaking down adhesions or knots in muscles, allowing for a wider range of movement. Blood circulation is vital for full recovery which ensures injury prevention in the long run. Sports Massage should not be confused with Sports physiotherapy, which is a more targeted remedial massage therapy to address musculoskeletal dysfunction and injury rehabilitation. Muscle tension, stress and fatigue can affect all of us whether we are athletes or busy housewife or stressed out corporate executive… Poor posture, prolonged sedentary lifestyle or frequent physical training can give rise to muscle tension and stress. A good sports massage can help to “iron out” the knots in the muscles soothe the aches and help rebalance the body and thus give our bodies much needed relief!
When Should You Get A Sports Massage? There are no hard and fast rules as to how often you should get a massage. It depends on the intensity of your training and the propensity for your muscles to tighten up. If you are training hard 3-4 times per week, you should probably get a massage one every fortnight. The best guide though is to listen to your body. If your muscles feel tight and you experience persistent soreness even after a day or two of rest after working out, your body probably needs to lighten up and a massage is probably needed.
